O'Neil joined the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005 while the singer was still in high school. The singer made it through to the top hundred round when judges applauded her singing ability. O'Neil received praise of high quality from her judges. She experienced significant defeats in the top 10 and Top 9 weeks of the finals after she was placed in the bottom three spots and the bottom two spots, respectively. They were stunned by the decision, and told the audience that Melissa was the most talented contestant. O'Neil's performance was so consistently good, that he did not fall into the third place. Her two additional performances on September 7,2005, where O'Neil advanced to the top two spots in the contest. Werner predicted that the morning papers would cover O'Neil's win over Rex Goudie as she became the third Canadian Idol and first female champion. O'Neil's Canadian Idol win was announced by Prime Minister Paul Martin immediately.
